Woven Polypropylene Bags

Large, breathable bags for bulk quantities & long-term storage

polypropylene bags

With the recent backlash against traditional plastic grocery bags, it's likely you have seen a new material used by retailers and shoppers alike: woven polypropylene. This specialized material is becoming a popular choice to create reusable shopping bags (e.g. the iconic blue IKEA bag) but has been utilized by brands for much longer as an effective material for long-term storage of large quantities of items.

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic resin material is produced by the polymerization of propylene. Woven polypropylene is created when strips or threads of PP are woven together in two directions (warp and weft). The result is a lightweight but strong and durable material suited to hold and store bulk quantities of product for extended periods of time.

Woven polypropylene bags are nontoxic and non-staining, and they are breathable while still having the ability to safeguard products from damage from water or vapor (with the addition of a laminated film barrier layer). Polypropylene bags are naturally resistant to cracks, stress and tearing due to their strong woven structure, and they will not degrade when coming into contact with moisture.

These bags can be produced with opaque or transparent layers and custom printed to display a brand’s unique logos, labels, graphics and designs. The MOQ for woven poly bags is 20,000, and they can be printed in up to 10 colors.

Common products packaged in woven PP bags are:

  • Seed
  • Grain
  • Salt
  • Rice
  • Coal
  • Flour
  • Sand
  • Animal feed/pet food
  • Cement
  • Fertilizer
  • Chemicals/powders

Typical sizes and uses for woven PP bags are:

  • 12x18” (30x45 cm) — small, loose items (e.g. hardware like nuts, bolts, washers)
  • 18x24” (45x60 cm) — small, loose items (e.g. nuts, bolts, washers, scaffolding clamps)
  • 20x32” (50x80 cm) — 20-25 kgs (e.g. coal, seed, shellfish, animal feed)
  • 20x36” (50x90 cm) — 25 kgs (e.g. seed, coal, logs, animal feed, etc.)
  • 24x36” (60x90 cm) — 30-40 kgs (e.g. seed, coal, logs, animal feed, etc.)
  • 24x40” (60x100 cm) — 50 kgs (e.g. feed, coal)
  • 30x40” (76x100 cm) — Lightweight bulky items
  • 30x45” (76x114 cm) — Bulky items (e.g. rags, clothing)
  • 28x56” (72x140 cm) — Large lightweight items (e.g. clothing, shoes, plastics)
  • 31x59”  (80x150 cm) — Very large lightweight items (e.g. plastic extrusions, coat hangers, etc.)

Polypropylene bags are one of the most sustainable packaging options on the market today. The materials can be melted down, recycled and used to produce other products, and the bags are uniquely reusable — they can withstand continuous emptying and refilling, allowing them to last between four and five years.

Our facilities can produce these bags in either the traditional side-seam bag style or the newer circular bag style. Fabric can be coated (protective) or uncoated to create a more breathable bag. Woven PP bags are hemmed at the top using a fold-and-sew operation that prevents the threads from fraying. This allows for a crisp, clean finish that also keeps your product securely protected inside the bag.
