Horse Feed Packaged Using Stand Up Bags

While many of our clients use stand up pouches, also known as horse feed pouchesstand bags or stand up bags, for retail products such as cereal, popcorn, or even candy, a growing segment of our business continues to come from the equine arena, that’s right, the horse industry.  In particular, many of our customers are packaging horse feed, horse treats, even vitamins and minerals created specifically for horses.  Just as food created for humans needs to be packaged properly, horse feed is no different.  Often these items are treated or covered with oil or other similar coatings which can turn rancid if not protected appropriately.

horse treatsThe combination of multiple layers of barrier film, whether a clear structure so the product can be seen or opaque such as Mylar metalized film or even foil to prevent any light penetration, creates the barrier properties that keep the contents fresher for longer while providing a stable base for the pouch to stand effectively on a store shelf.  While many companies who work with horse feed, horse treats, or even horse supplements start out just trying to protect their product from moisture, vapor, or odor, which is a natural benefit of stand up pouches, it is the wide face and back that provide excellent room for a label or even better, custom printing that separate this packaging product from anything else currently available.  Not just big national brands like Nutrena have the retail store shelves to themselves anymore.   With a minimum run of just 5000 pieces required for custom printed stand bags, small companies can build their brand and compete with the “big boys” in their industry and win!

In a recent article regarding equine health on horsechannel.com, in particular about Cushings Disease, the diet is becoming increasing important in the treatment and management of this disease.  Vitamins C and E and other antioxidants along with chasteberry, which is an organic source of dopamine have seen good results.  It is a fact, however, that horses with this disease have trouble keeping weight on, so exercise along with diet will be beneficial.  Further, providing food and medicine for horses with or without sickness in packaging that keeps it fresher for longer and prevents odor and spoilage will result in happier consumers and most definitely happier and healthier horses.
