Spouted and Liquid Stand Up Pouches

Cost Effective-Environmentally Friendly-Sustainable Packaging Solutions

It seems as if it has taken 10 years for the US and North American retailer to finally look long and hard at spouted stand up pouches for liquids.  Historically the US consumer has been “saying” they want more eco friendly packaging but either they’ve been ignored or no one has demanded it strongly enough.

Overseas in countries like Australia and New Zealand, spouted stand up packaging has been used for food and non-food products alike.  Motor oil and food cooking oil.  BBQ sauces and cleaning supplies.  Wine and alcohol along with pesticides and chemicals.  Overseas governments have demanded, and retailers have listened, but here in the US, we’ll still use our rigid 264 ounce laundry detergent container.  It’s incredible how lazy we are in North America.

Finally, companies large and small are looking at flexible packaging, more specifically, spouted stand up pouches with spouts and fitments to not only provide eco friendly packaging alternatives but cost savings as well.

Why did it take 10 years for someone to look at a rigid ½ gallon or even quart size bottle that costs $1.00, takes up a ton of room in a warehouse, and requires 3 – 4 times the energy to create and say, “Why aren’t we looking at something different?”  Spouted stand up pouches can be made with any number of pour spouts, fitments, and now spigot spouts (like a beer tap) to provide consumers and retailers alike with a cost effective and very sustainable options.

Stand up pouches with spouts cost 1/3 the amount or less than rigid bottles.  They take up a fraction of the space in shipment or storage, and if you can believe it…ARE RECYCLABLE and landfill friendly.

Now, these liquid pouches can come with spray triggers and even dispenser pumps for shampoos and fertilizer.  Laminated barrier film is extremely strong, puncture resistant, and leak-proof when designed properly.  Often very little retrofitting is required for companies to fill pouches when it could also fill bottles.  This is part of a much broader topic and eBook, Click Here if interested.

But Wait...There's More

More to noodle on...

This isn’t to say Spouted and Liquid Stand Up Pouches are indestructible or without flaws.  There are limits to how big a spouted pouch can be and still maintain a consistent “shape” without needing secondary packaging around it (like a bag in a box).  However, the ability of a company to drastically reduce the amount of plastic and packaging that ultimately is sent to a landfill by upwards of 75% is incredible and not to be overlooked.

While everyone wants something that will biodegrade, there just isn’t anything available that has the strength and durability toSpouted Stand Up Pouches hold liquid, stand effectively, and still discharge the ingredients like spouted stand up pouches.

If you want to have a “sustainable” message and story, look to stand up pouches with spouts and fitments to make your case.  Either the spouted pouch itself is your finished packaging or you can use spouted pouches as a refill for a more permanent package…both are very successful sustainable packaging options.
