What the Heck Is a Fitment, Anyway?

If you're new to spouted pouches, the terminology can be overwhelming:

  • Fitments?
  • Valves?
  • Resealable?
  • Aseptic?
  • Tamper-evident?

1. What Is a Spout Fitment?

A spout fitment is the hard plastic component heat-sealed into the flexible pouch that allows the liquid product to be poured, dispensed, or resealed. Key parts include the spout body, cap, tamper-evident ring, and optional valve or membrane.

2. Fitment Sizes & Openings

Opening DiameterCommon Use Cases
8mm–10mmNutraceuticals, baby food, sauces
13mm–16mmBeverages, condiments, cosmetic gels
18mm–20mm+Detergents, automotive fluids

3. Valve Types: Controlling Flow and Function

  • One-way valves: Prevent backflow (personal care, medical)
  • Air-return valves: Ensure consistent dispensing (squeezable products)
  • Dispensing valves: Controlled dosing (automotive, industrial)

4. Tamper-Evident & Child-Resistant Closures

  • Breakable pull rings or tear bands
  • Heat-sealed caps with visible perforation
  • Dual-action open (push + twist) for child safety

5. Resealability: How Many Times Can It Close?

  • Flip-top caps
  • Screw-on caps
  • Snap closures with locking ridges

6. Customization & Fitment Selection Tips

  • Viscosity of your product
  • Consumer use case (single-use, travel, refill)
  • Filling method (hot fill, cold fill, aseptic)
  • Regulatory needs (child-safe, food contact)
