Is Cardboard Box Packaging Good for Cereals?

Packaging for CerealsIt’s not bad, but it’s not good either. But then again, although cereal box packaging has its own share of drawbacks, it is not the worst. Of course, it is more expensive than stand up bags. It is not exactly environment-friendly either. Plus these boxes lack the ability to reseal. That said, cereal boxes have been around for several decades and they still enjoy a lot of popularity.

Cereal boxes are likely to be here for another 10 or 20 years. By that time, they will have been completely replaced by stand bags.

In this article you will find a comparative analysis of cardboard boxes and stand up pouches for food.

(1) Cost
Standup pouches are much less expensive than cardboard boxes. Custom printed standup pouches can be bought from StandUpPouches.net for as little as 15 or 20 cents apiece. A cardboard box, on the other hand, costs as much as 35 cents.

Transportation and storage costs of both materials are negligible. That said, stand up bags do have a slight edge over cardboard boxes because they are thinner and lighter.

(2) Environmental impact
It takes more resources to produce cardboard boxes than standup pouches. Standup bags can be reused while it’s generally hard to reuse cardboard boxes. Pouches are recyclable. Cardboard boxes can also be recycled; however, recycled cardboard boxes are not exactly safe for packaging food items.

(3) Safety
In 2011, a team of scientists discovered that packaging food products in recycled cardboard boxes is not safe. Immediately after they published this report, several large organizations stopped using recycled cardboard boxes. In comparison, our standup pouches are made from materials approved by FDA. This eliminates any cause for safety concerns.

(4) Improved visibility
One of the chief reasons that contributed towards the popularity of standup pouches is their versatility. Retailers can display them in many ways and attract customers. While a cardboard food box can only stand up on shelves, a stand bag can be easily hung on hooks. It comes with hang holes and gussets. These flexible pouches are also capable of standing up on a store shelf. This visibility increases sales.

(5) Branding
Cardboard cereal boxes have four sides. They do not allow expansive artwork unless, of course, the manufacturer is willing to break up the logos and product information into small bits that can fit on each of these four sides.

Stand up pouches, on the other hand, have wide front and back areas where companies can print their logos and detailed product information.

So, yes, standup bags are definitely better than cereal boxes made of cardboard. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that cardboard cereal boxes are totally bad. If they were, they wouldn't be used today.
