Flat Bottom Stand Up Bags Are Landfill Friendly!

flat bottom stand up pouchA study published on March 27, 2012 by Cone Communications reported that 80 percent of Americans doubt that companies are addressing the complete environmental impacts of their processes and/or products.  What's more, only 44 percent of those surveyed trusted claims made by companies about being 'green'.

69 percent of American consumers at least sometimes, if not routinely, consider the environment when making purchasing decisions.  Companies should, therefore, not only have a policy that addresses environmental impact but should be able to conclusively establish that the policy does indeed result in a reduced environmental impact.

The manufacture of consumer products and, specifically, the packaging of same, has long gotten the attention of environmentally conscious consumers.  Manufacturers, shippers, distributors and retailers are best served if the packaging is recyclable.  Failing that, every effort should be made to ensure that products are brought to market in landfill friendly packaging.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (the EPA), "Municipal solid waste landfills (MSWLFs) receive household waste...  Solid waste landfills must be designed to protect the environment from contaminants which may be present in the solid waste stream."

Flat bottom box bags are a leading example of landfill friendly packaging.   Also known as flat bottom box bags and stand up bags, flat bottom stand bags are the result of a process which involves laminating together multiple layers of scientifically designed film.  The bags are moisture and puncture resistant and guard the contents against vapor, odor and, if necessary, ultraviolet light and pests.

Although these bags are normally recyclable, many people don't engage in active recycling, no matter how much they may claim otherwise.  However, your brand will be strengthened with consumers who, when making a purchasing decision, consider the environmental impact of a product's entire life cycle because flat barrier bag are landfill friendly packaging.  These bags are made with 12 percent less film than other bags of the same size, thereby weighing less and taking up less space.*

The Cone study also found that as many as 77 percent of those surveyed would be willing to boycott companies whose 'green' claims proved to be misleading.  The fact that flat bottom stand bags are truly landfill friendly packaging will save your company from that fate.

*As an aside, bags that weigh less cost less per unit to transport, but we digress.  Want to learn more?

Benefits of Side Gusset Flat Bottom Stand Bags

Flexible packaging.  Is there a more popular way to package products these days?  If the retail and grocery store shelves are any indication, probably not.   Flexible packaging is durable, versatile, practical, convenient and, in many cases, recyclable (or at least landfill friendly).  Flexible packages, especially those made from plastic film, are lighter and take up less space than boxes, cartons or cans.  This means that flexible packaging is more fuel-efficient to produce and transport per unit than other package types.

Stand up pouches have long been considered the standard in flexible packaging.  And now that there are side gusset stand up bags, the bar has been raised even further.

Stand up pouches have also been known as stand up pouches, Mylar® stand bags and custom printed stand bags.   Much like those previous incarnations, side gusset stand up bags are constructed by laminating multiple layers of specially formulated film together.   This process results in creating a barrier that is both moisture and puncture resistant and protects the contents from vapor, odor and, if necessary, ultraviolet light, pests and unwanted oxygen (a feature especially important when packaging seafood, for example).

Flat Bottom Stand Up Pouch Flexible Retail Packaging

Retail sales are important to us all.  They're seen as an indicator of economic health.  Retail sales reflect consumer confidence, establish market demand and set supply levels.  Basically, retail sales are a prime driver of our national economy.

One factor in retail sales that has gotten increasing attention over the years is packaging, especially as it's significance to product marketing grows.  Specifically, your product's package is often the first exposure a consumer unfamiliar with your product line has.  Given that a full one-half of all shoppers haven't decided on what product to buy until they're standing in front of the shelf in a store aisle, the importance of packaging becomes clearer.

From the early days of leaves and skins through glass and tins and now plastic and aluminum, packaging has evolved as technology has advanced.  Today's products are wrapped in recycled materials and the latest polymers and composites.  Labeling has become as modern as the packaging itself as producers and retailers strive to distinguish their brands from those of the competition.

Flexible retail packaging is perhaps the most protective, convenient, attractively marketable and environmentally friendly choice for most product types.  The ultimate in flexible retail packaging includes what are called stand up pouches and flexible box bags  (both of which are a variation of the stand up bag packaging phenomenon).  Made by laminating together multiple layers of specially formulated film constructed of materials fully approved by the FDA, stand up pouches are moisture and puncture resistant, protecting contents from vapor, odor and, when necessary, pests and ultraviolet light.

Stand up pouch flexible retail packaging is built with a bottom gusset that provides a stable base, allowing the product to stand up on the shelf, either in the store or at home.  The revolutionary new box bag design also has side gussets, creating a box-like structure that permits the bag to retain its shape and stay upright, even when the contents are weighty (think big bag of dog food!).

Food and Beverage Marketing + Stand Up Pouches

Food and Beverage MarketingOver the past several months we've had the opportunity to address many aspects of both marketing and packaging of a wide variety of products including food/beverage, soaps, and pet products, among others.  We haven't so much learned new things as come to better understand some basic truths when it comes to packaging, all of which can be boiled down to one simple thing:  Marketing of packaged goods is, at the end of the day, about the package actually marketing the product.

Half of all retail product purchases aren't made until the moment the shopper stands in front of the shelf, faced with choices, usually with dozens of other things on his or her mind.  It is this very simple factor underlying food and beverage sales that should drive each and every marketing decision that relates to packaging.

If no amount of advertising or promotion has persuaded that consumer to make a decision before he or she walks down the store aisle, then clearly something else must.  And, as we've come to find out, that something is usually packaging.

For packaging to be effective, it must not only protect contents, it must tell the story of the contents it protects.  Every product has a tale to tell.  You have limited opportunity to tell it.   Packaging maximizes that opportunity.  Remember, your package must grab the attention of that undecided shopper (and not in a bad way!).

Stand up pouches are great for food and beverage marketing.  The construction design provides several ways in which your product can, in essence, sell itself by telling its own story.  The pouches have wide front and back panels on which you can affix your own labels.  If desired, you can order custom-printing (in up to 10 colors) of information about your product, your company, website links and even a QR code, all of which allow the product to basically speak for itself.

Also known as stand up bags, Mylar® barrier bags and custom printed stand bags, stand up pouches stand out because they stand up on the shelf.  Available hang holes (either round or sombrero-style) offer retailers another display option, one sure to catch the attention of shoppers.

Food and beverage marketing is hit and miss.  Your product either connects or it doesn't.  Stand up pouches allow your product to tell it's unique story and connect with consumers, making it the ideal packaging for food and beverages.

Health Food Marketing In Today's Environment

health food marketingHealth food, once considered a specialty product with an appeal limited to fitness buffs and so-called tree huggers, is now very much a mainstream commodity.   As more people consider dietary concerns in their purchasing decisions and more companies produce foods purported to have healthful properties, stores now offer a myriad of choices sold by an ever-increasing number of competitors.  Health food marketing has, therefore, become much more common.

Because many health food companies occupy a niche market or offer a limited number of products, their marketing efforts are not what we normally think of when we talk about product promotion simply because they don't have the advertising budget of larger companies.  Even if they did, they would still have to deal with a very sobering consumer statistic:  More than half of all shoppers haven't made a decision about what product to purchase by the time they find themselves in the store aisle, standing in front of shelves full of choices.

How, then, should a company engage in health food marketing?  One suggestion is to utilize something it must spend money on in any event:  Packaging.  Integrating the concepts of marketing into packaging design enables your health food product to make its strongest statement where it will have the biggest impact:  On the shelf.

A stand up pouch offers as much impact as a package probably can.   Multiple layers of specially formulated film are laminated together to create a barrier that is strong, durable, waterproof and puncture-resistant.   This design yields a bag that stands up on the shelf so that it stands apart from the competition.  Round and sombrero-style hang holes offering retailers a second display option are also available.

The design of stand up pouches does not offer only superior display options, however.  Also known as Mylar® barrier bags, stand up bags and custom printed stand bags, stand up pouches have wide front and back panels that provide the ideal canvas for affixing your company labels.  The panels also accommodate custom printing in up to 10 colors of your product info, graphics and even your QR code.  Transparent film is also available which allows your health food to essentially market itself.

Using stand up pouches will enhance your brand image with the environmentally-conscious consumer as well because the pouches are recyclable and take up little room in landfills.

When it comes to health food marketing, stand up pouches are what's best.

Organic Food Marketing Using Stand Up Pouches

organic food marketing using stand up bagsWe are reminded daily about all the things that are bad for our health, even in the foods we eat.  As a result, store shelves are now filled with "natural" and "organic" items.  For many, the terms are interchangeable.  They shouldn't be.  There is a distinction and it comes with a significant difference:

Simply stated, organic produce and other ingredients are grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products do not take antibiotics or growth hormones.
    www.organic.org

While "natural" foods may share some of these characteristics, they aren't required to.  And that, to those who sell organic goods, is a critical difference.

Organic food marketing has a story to tell.  Most people do not know that only products that are at least 95 percent organic can actually use the term "Organic" and display the USDA Organic Seal.  In order to say "Made with organic ingredients" on the label, 70% of the ingredients must, in fact, be organic.   In some respects, marketing the organic component of your product is as important as protecting your registered mark or guarding your proprietary information:  They all speak to what makes your product different, what makes it worth buying.

Stand up pouches are a great way to market organic foods.  Built from multiple layers of specially-formulated film that have been laminated together, stand up pouches are durable, waterproof and puncture resistant, protecting your products from vapor, odor and moisture.  And, critical especially because organic foods haven't been chemically treated to extend shelf life, stand up pouches lock in freshness and flavor.

Organic food marketing with stand up pouches is easy because of the pouch construction.  Wide front and back panels permit you to affix your own labels.  Alternatively, you can order custom printing of your text and graphics (e.g., the USDA Seal!) to be applied directly onto the bag.  Clear film is available to provide you another packaging option or you can combine some component of all of these.

Also known as Mylar® barrier bags and stand up bags, stand up pouches stand out from the competition because they stand up on the shelf.  Available hang holes offer retailers another display option.  And, appropriately for organic food packaging, stand up pouches are recyclable and take up little space in landfills.

Effective organic food marketing:  Stand up pouches are a natural.

How To Market A New Food Product

marketing a new food productThe food and beverage industry is not for the faint of heart.  Nothing illustrates that point as well, perhaps, as the fact that only five of every 100 new products brought to market will end up having a market share of more than 1% after one year on the shelf.

Not only do you have to choose a market suitable for your product, you should conduct consumer testing, decide whether you are going to serve the mainstream or a niche market and, most importantly for the purpose of having your product tell its story, employ packaging designed to attract your target market.

Yes, one of the most important things to remember when addressing how to market a new food product is the packaging.  Because consumers have no point of reference, no relationship with the brand based on prior consumption,  your product must tell a story that persuades shoppers to abandon any loyalty they had for another product.  A strong first impression is imperative, failing which yours will likely not gain at least that 1% market share after the first year.

Stand up pouches are a successful solution to the challenge of how to market a new food product.  Built by laminating together multiple layers of specially-formulated film, stand up pouches are strong, durable, waterproof and puncture-resistant.  Also known as stand up bags and Mylar® barrier bags, stand up pouches guard against spoilage by protecting food from moisture, odor and vapor.  At the same time, the barrier locks in freshness, flavor and aroma.

Stand up pouches offer a lesson in how to market a new food product.  The wide front and back panels conveniently accommodate your company labels.  Conversely, up to 10 colors can be custom-printed directly onto the bag exterior.  Transparent film is available to better display your food item.  You can combine any of these features, all of which serve to allow your new food product to tell its own story and stand apart from the competition.

Speaking of standing apart, stand up pouches stand up on the shelf.  Available hang holes provide retailers a second display option.  The result is that your new food product will make a strong first impression on that half of all shoppers who won't decide what to buy until standing in front of the store shelf.

How to market a new food product:   Stand up pouches will satisfy your appetite for market share.

Food Marketing Trends

food marketing trendsInnova Market Insights has identified key trends expected to impact the food and beverage market beginning this year.  Most of those trends relate, in one form or another, to marketing.  Noteworthy as well is the fact that packaged food products account for a significant share of total spending on food in developed countries where convenience is valued.  The trends that will impact the food and beverage market in general and marketing packaged foods in particular include, according to Innova:

  • "Pure" is the New Natural.
  • Increased corporate social responsibility and sustainability strategies.
  • Interest in where foods are grown, manufactured, and packaged, all driven by a desire to support local suppliers, a demand for ethnic products, concerns over the quality/safety of imports, and/or the demand for authenticity of products claimed to be from a particular place.
  • Premium is at a premium.  Even in times of austerity, a premium product is often purchased to avoid a feeling of scarcity or sacrifice.
  • Companies are placing increasing emphasis on an aging population, touting features such as "easy to open".
  • The increasing demand of those consumers between 40 and 65 seeking to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
  • Consumers want scientifically proven claims listed on their foods.

Today, competition is fierce and margins are shrinking so product diversification is even more integral to sales success.  The best way to render your product distinctive in the marketplace is to tell its story, especially if you are marketing a new food product.  The best way to tell that story is to let your packaging do the talking.

Creative packaging using a stand up pouch is how to market a new food product.  Constructed from laminating together multiple layers of specialty film, stand up pouches protect food contents from vapor, odor, and moisture while locking in flavor and freshness.  They are durable, convenient to use (with available tear notches and zip seal closures) and puncture resistant.

Telling your product's story is easy with stand up pouches.  Wide front and back panels accommodate labels or custom printing, enabling you to include not only your product's story (in the context of the trends cited above) but also, for example, a QR code and links to your website/social media.  Available clear film can make your product even more attractive.

Marketing a new food product requires telling its story to address market trends.  With stand up pouches, your sales will be a never-ending story.

Innovative Product Packaging Makes Your Product Stand Out

innovative product packaging for liquidsToday's retail marketplace is a tough place to do business.  Margins are tight, competition is fierce, and consumer spending, while on the up-tick, continues to be sluggish.  When consumers do go shopping, half of them have no clue about what they're going to buy until they're actually standing in front of the store shelf.  Succeeding in this environment takes courage, foresight and ingenuity.  Companies must engage in creative product development, stay current with the latest social trends, carefully plan marketing campaigns and employ innovative product packaging.  Failing to do any of these things well turn a company's efforts to grow into a simple fight for business survival.

Given the current economic climate, it is more important than ever that your products stand out, both in terms of performance and appearance.  The more creative, the more innovative your packaging, the more likely it is to attract the attention of a shopper standing in the store aisle trying to decide which product to buy.  Innovative product packaging is, therefore, key to retail success.

Stand up pouches are one example of innovative product packaging.  These pouches (also known as stand up bags or Mylar® stand bags) are constructed by laminating together multiple layers of specially formulated film to create a barrier that protects contents from moisture, vapor, odor and pests.  For food products, the characteristics that keep out the bad helps keep in the good as stand up pouches lock in freshness, flavor, aroma and nutritional potency.

The innovative product packaging features extend to available tear notches for easy opening and zip seals for convenient closure that extends the shelf life of the contents.

The innovation of stand up pouches extends to the different ways they can be used to market your brand.  As the name indicates, they stand up on the shelf so they stand apart from the competition.  Optional round and sombrero-style hang holes offer another retail store display option.

Innovative product packaging maximizes your marketing and branding efforts.  Stand up pouches have wide front and back panels for direct application of your own labels or for custom printing of whatever you desire.  The bags are available in clear film or with clear film 'windows'.  Any or all of these features can be combined, a degree of diversity which is surely innovative.

For innovative product packaging, stand up pouches are a creative way to make your products stand out. Want to learn more?

Specialty Food Marketing And Stand Up Bags

specialty food in stand up pouchesWhen conducting specialty food marketing, advertising probably plays a lesser role than it does when marketing 'regular' food.  The limited availability of specialty foods, combined with a smaller demographic of potential buyers, renders any extensive ad campaign too expensive.   Yet marketing remains critical to retail success.  The challenge, then, is to identify the most effective vehicle for specialty food marketing.

Packaging is your best solution for meeting that challenge.  Why?  Because one out of every two shoppers hasn't made a decision about what product to buy when he or she stands in front of the store shelf.  If your specialty item hasn't been widely advertised, it's possible that your packaging will be the first exposure a consumer has to your product.  If so, how your specialty foods are packaged is almost as important as the quality of the foods themselves.

Success in specialty food marketing is easy if you choose packaging that promotes while it protects your product line.  A stand up pouch, also known as a Mylar® barrier bag and stand up bag, is just such packaging.  Constructed by laminating together multiple layers of specially formulated film,  stand up pouches create a barrier that protects contents from odor, vapor, and moisture while locking in freshness, flavor and aroma.   Of course, those characteristics would be expected of any food packaging.  Not expected are several features which make specialty food marketing using stand up pouches so effective.

By standing up on the shelf, stand up bags stand apart from the competition.  Available round and sombrero-style hang holes provide a second display option.

Stand up pouches perform best in marketing specialty foods when it comes to labeling and branding your product.  Wide front and back panels provide ample space for you to affix your own labels or to have text and graphics custom-printed directly onto the bag exterior in up to 10 colors.  Your bag can be made of transparent film or you can include a clear film window as part of the design.  Any combination of these features is available.

Finally, when engaging in specialty food marketing, any additional feature that distinguishes your product from others should be emphasized.  Packaging with stand up pouches is Eco-friendly because they are recyclable and take up little room in landfills, both of which make your product seem even more special.

Stand up pouches for specialty food marketing:  Only the best for the best.
